The Facebook grifters making money off AI Holocaust victims

Sunny Liu, Director of Research at the Stanford Social Media Lab discusses AI and holocaust distortions on BBC Podcast

On a recent episode of  BBC's The Documentary Podcast, Stanford Social Media Lab's Director of Research Sunny Xun Liu, discussed how AI tools are being used in ways that risk distorting history. The podcast examines how AI-generated images of Holocaust victims, first flagged in June by the Auschwitz Memorial, have spread on Facebook, with some networks profiting from the content through Meta’s payment systems.

“It’s not just stealing a page or somebody’s image, but stealing their stories, their traumas and their identities. Those are fundamentally distortions of human history. Holocaust denial and distortions are not new, it’s always there. But now deep fake and AI are another tool for them to do that.” - Sunny Xun Liu

Liu noted that while Holocaust denial has existed for decades, new technologies make it easier for misinformation to spread widely and quickly.
